Tips on Petsitting for Other People

The holidays are the busiest time of year for travel. It’s always great to reunite with friends and family members that you don’t see very often! While many people board their pets for vacations, others ask friends and family members to petsit while they are gone. If you’ve agreed to watch someone else’s pet, read on for some great tips from your local North Phoenix, AZ vet.

Petproofing

Make sure that your home is safe for your furry guest by taking some basic precautions. Some of the things you’ll want to remove, secure, or protect include toxic plants; medications; household chemicals; automotive products; and plastic bags, wrappers, and ties. Secure wires and cords and any small or sharp items. If you’re petsitting a dog, you may also want to pick up shoes, purses, and anything else Fido may try to chew. Ask your vet for more information.

Veterinary Care

Before your furry houseguest arrives, make sure that they are current on all parasite control products and important vaccines. If your four-legged visitor takes medication or supplements, make sure that you clearly understand the proper dosages and instructions. Also, be sure to get the contact information for your little buddy’s veterinarian.

Written Instructions

Ask for written instructions for any special care that your adorable houseguest will require. This may cover things like walk schedules, favorite toys, and feeding procedures. You’ll also want to find out if your cute visitor has any allergies or phobias that you should be concerned about.

Contact Information

Make sure that you have the correct contact information for your friend or family member. Find out whether you should call with small questions, or only in emergencies.

Your Pets

If you have furbabies of your own, petsitting may be a bit more complicated. If you have a dog, and have been asked to watch another pooch, make sure that your canine buddies will get along before you agree to petsit. Better safe than sorry! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Emergency Plan

Set an emergency plan, just in case something happens while you are taking care of Fido or Fluffy. We recommend having a backup person lined up. It’s always better to be prepared!
