5 Ways to Keep Fluffy From Becoming Obese

October 11th is Pet Obesity Awareness Day! Many of our feline patients are, well, a bit pudgy. Chubby cats may be adorable, but they actually face some very serious health risks. Fluffy will be much healthier if she stays at or near her ideal weight. Here, a Glendale, AZ vet offers tips on keeping your kitty trim.

Toys

Your pampered housepet is actually a fierce predator at heart. Offer your feline buddy lots of toys to play with. Cats all have their own preferences for playthings. For instance, some furballs love catnip mice, while others may prefer automated laser pointers, robotic mice, or remote-controlled snakes. Give Fluffy a variety to see what she likes best.

Playtime

As far as Fluffy is concerned, the best toy around is you! Take time to play with your furry pal every day. Use toys that you can control, like a wand toy or a laser pointer. Even a few minutes of pouncing and jumping will help keep your kitty fit and healthy. Your cute pet will also enjoy a good window view. Keeping your cat entertained will not only help keep her fit, it will also reduce boredom snacking.

Furniture

Get Fluffy some furniture that encourages her to jump and climb. Cat towers are great for this! Your cat will gain a jungle gym, napping spot, nail-care station, and a lookout point. If you want to save money, go the DIY route and make your kitty a tower out of an old stepladder, a bookcase, or a metal storage rack. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can even use PVC pipe or a thick branch. Look online for specific instructions.

Portion Control

Did you know that even giving your furball just ten extra calories a day can cause her to gain a pound a year? That’s a lot for a kitty! Pay close attention to Fluffy’s portion sizes. It may also help to feed her at the same time every day.

Resist Theatrics

Some of our furry patients have their owners wrapped around their paws. Offer your kitty good, high-quality pet food, but don’t overindulge her. Follow your vet’s nutritional recommendations. You’ll be less likely to fall for Fluffy’s theatrics if you know she’s eating what she should!
