Soothing a Nervous Cat

Do you have a scaredy-cat on your hands? Kitties all have their own unique personalities. While some are bold and fearless, others are very timid, and can be easily frightened. If your feline pal falls into the latter category, read on! A North Phoenix, AZ vet discusses soothing an anxious kitty in this article.

Playtime

Did you know that playing with your pet is one of the best things you can do for her? Running, jumping, and pouncing will allow your furball to burn off that nervous energy she has. It’s also a great way for her to channel any angst or anxiety into a healthy outlet. After a fun round of Catch The Feather Toy, your furball will probably be tired out, which means she’ll naturally be calmer.

Hiding Places

Is your cat nervous because another pet is bullying her? Make sure your feline friend has a safe spot to retreat to in every room. Vertical space, such as a cat tower, is good for this, especially for kitties that want to hide from a dog. Fluffy may also want to take refuge under a bed, behind a sofa, or in a kitty tent or tipi.

Music

Music soothes the savage beast… and it can also soothe a nervous kitty. Play some quiet background music for Fluffy. You can also turn a TV on for her.

Friendship

Cats are very social, and often become unhappy if they feel too isolated. Pay attention to Fluffy every day and make sure she feels loved. If your feline buddy is a cuddler, let her snuggle up on your lap. If she’s more aloof, just talk to her and offer her toys and treats. If your timid pet is a recent addition to your home, she may just need time to settle in. Never force attention on your cat.

Pet-Calming Products

If your furry little friend is constantly anxious, ask your vet for advice on using kitty-calming products. There are quite a few different options available now, including treats, sprays, and collars. These mimic the natural pheromones cats produce when they are calm and content. For extremely severe cases, medication may be an option. Ask your vet for specific advice.
