Keeping an Indoor Cat Purring

Do you keep your cat indoors? Good for you! Fluffy is both safer and healthier staying inside. However, indoor kitties don’t get as much activity or stimulation as outdoor furballs. Therefore, you’ll need to take a few steps to keep your pet purring and content. A Glendale, AZ vet discusses indoor cat care below.

Toys

Kitties may be cute and cuddly little furballs, but they are also fierce predators in the wild. Fluffy is essentially hard-wired to want to pounce on things. Indulge your tiny lion by offering her lots of toys to play with.

Veterinary Care

It’s great that you keep your feline pal indoors, where she is safe from weather, predators, and other hazards. However, Fluffy will still need regular veterinary care. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Playtime

While it’s important to offer Fluffy lots of toys, nothing beats just playing with her. Even spending a few minutes a day playing with your furry friend will keep her motor running!

Stimulation

We know, cats are absolute masters at doing nothing. But, believe it or not, Fluffy will become restless and unhappy with nothing to do. Keep a TV or radio on for background noise when you leave. The sound of music and voices will soothe your pet, and can keep her from feeling lonely. Some cats also enjoy watching shows made for kitties. (Disclaimer: results may vary.)

Window Seat

If cats could rank their favorite activities, birdwatching would no doubt be on the list, right after sleeping and eating. Make Fluffy a comfy seat, so she can relax and watch birds and squirrels.

Kitty Comforts

Keep Fluffy’s comfort in mind. If you won’t be home before nightfall, keep a light on for her, so she isn’t left sitting alone in the dark. Leave your climate control running as well.

Catio

Do you have an enclosed porch or patio? Make it into a catio by adding pet-safe plants and some kitty furniture. You don’t have to give up the space: this can also be a great coffee spot or reading nook! (Tip: check the ASPCA site here for a list of suggestions.)

Love

Love is the final ingredient in any good pet care routine. Spend lots of time with Fluffy, and make sure that she feels loved and safe!
